The Toyota RAV4: A reliable powerhouse
In the competitive world of SUVs, reliability is king — and the latest data from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) places the Toyota RAV4 firmly at the top. For car dealers, this is more than just good news — it’s an opportunity to meet growing customer demand with confidence. Here’s a breakdown of our findings and what they mean for your dealership.
Our analysis is based on a sample of 4,000 vehicle repair claims paid by WSG during the last 12 months across 18 of the UK’s most popular used SUV models.
The RAV4 Reigns Supreme
The Toyota RAV4 emerged as the most reliable SUV in our analysis, with a remarkably low claim rate of just 5.36%. For dealers, this translates to fewer post-sale headaches and a more satisfied customer base. The RAV4 is known for its well-rounded appeal, offering practicality, comfort, and quality.
Its reliability is matched by global popularity. The previous generation was the fourth best-selling car worldwide and remains a top choice for customers who value durability – and with repair bills typically being well below the norm, buyers can be assured of lower long-term maintenance costs.
The most common issues were alternators averaging £289.38, EGR valves (£274.81) and gearboxes (£1,037.67).
Ford Puma and Kia Sportage: close contenders
The Ford Puma and Kia Sportage rounded out the top three, with claim rates of 6.56% and 7.09% respectively. Each offers distinct selling points:
Ford Puma: A versatile small crossover, the Puma boasts excellent hybrid technology and clever design. The most common issues were electric motors (on its hybrid and EV models) averaging £1,506.00, air conditioning condensers (£530.43) and O2 sensors (£155.25).
Kia Sportage: Renowned for its bold styling and Kia’s unmatched seven-year warranty, the Sportage appeals to families seeking reliability and practicality. The most common issues were the gearbox synchro (£655.22), alternator (£335.23) and starter motor / solenoid (£334.77).
These models are fantastic alternatives for customers seeking SUVs that combine style and function without sacrificing peace of mind.
The Land Rover Discovery: A cautionary tale
While the Land Rover Discovery is desirable for its off-road prowess and versatility, it ranked last in reliability with a staggering 17.67% claim rate and an average claim value of £814.08.
Dealers should prepare to address customer concerns about high repair costs. The most common issues for the Discovery were diesel particulate filters averaging £1,311.53, Nox sensors (£738.48) and batteries (£348.59).
Positioning the Discovery as a niche vehicle for adventure-seekers, rather than as a family SUV, could help manage consumer expectations.

Customers are drawn to SUVs for their versatility, spacious interiors and elevated driving position. As these vehicles evolve, however, electrical and electronic issues are becoming increasingly common, having made up 24% of all SUV claims paid by us in the past year.
