When it comes to choosing a first car, reliability is usually a top priority. In this exclusive blog, we share our reliability data for 10 of the most popular first-time buyer cars (according to Auto Express and Carwow). We also highlight the three most common issues and the single most expensive warranty claims paid by us under each model.

Data from our recent warranty claims analysis (from claims paid between August 2023 and August 2024) revealed that the Toyota Aygo has taken the lead as the most reliable car for first-time buyers and new drivers.

We analysed the warranty repair claims across 10 of the most popular first-time buyer models. The findings show that Japanese car brands continue to dominate the top spots for dependability, with the Ford Fiesta and Suzuki Swift rounding out the top three.

Toyota Aygo

The Toyota Aygo: A reliability champion

The Toyota Aygo secured the number one spot as the most reliable used car for first-time buyers, with an impressively low warranty claim rate of just 6.25%.

Known for its compact size and city-friendly design, the Aygo has been a popular choice since its debut in 2005. Despite many manufacturers exiting the small city car market, Toyota has continued to invest in the Aygo line, most recently launching the Aygo X in 2022.

While the Aygo shines in reliability, it’s not immune to issues. The most common repairs for the Aygo included:

  • Front wiper motors with an average repair cost of £289
  • Clutch release bearings with an average repair cost of £341
  • Air compressors with an average repair cost of £469

These repair costs are relatively low compared to other models, making the Aygo a cost-effective choice for young drivers looking for an affordable, reliable vehicle.

Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta: spacious and dependable

Coming in second with a claim rate of 8.32% is the Ford Fiesta, a supermini known for its spacious interior and solid track record. The most common repairs for the Fiesta included:

  • Coil springs with an average repair cost of £186
  • Alternators with an average repair cost of £386
  • Water pumps with an average repair cost of £235

Despite Ford’s decision to cease production of the Fiesta, it still remains a popular and reliable choice in the used car market.

Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift: A global favourite

In third place is the Suzuki Swift, with a claim rate of 8.99%. The Swift is a globally recognized model, having gone through several iterations since its launch in 2004. The most common repairs for the Swift include:

  • Timing chains with an average repair cost of £1,630
  • Alternators with an average repair cost of £249
  • Coil springs with an average repair cost of £164

The Swift remains a great option for new drivers seeking affordability and reliability in a compact package.

Common issues in older models

Our analysis also revealed that electrical and electronic faults were the most frequent issues across all 10 models reviewed, making up over 20% of the total repairs. This was particularly common in cars aged between 5-7 years at the time of claim.

The four most common failures across the different models were Nox sensors, alternators, water pumps, and suspension failures.

Most expensive claims by model

The following table shows the single most expensive warranty claims paid by WSG for each of the 10 models between August 2023 and August 2024.

The future of small cars

The supermini segment is shrinking, with fewer manufacturers investing in smaller cars due to the growing demand for hybrid and electric SUVs and saloons. Despite this trend, there are still plenty of reliable and affordable used cars for first-time buyers.

A recent WSG survey of over 500 drivers aged 18-25 revealed that running costs and insurance premiums were the two most significant factors influencing their car buying decisions.

As the automotive market continues to evolve, the demand for small, reliable vehicles remains strong among young drivers. Whether you’re eyeing the Toyota Aygo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 or Fiat 500, the data shows that these models offer a great balance of reliability, affordability, and style.
